Felicia Tuggle
The mission of the Department of Social Work prepares students to excel in
social work practice. The BSW programs prepares students for generalist practice
and the MSW program builds on the generalist foundation and prepares students
for advanced practice in Clinical and Social Administration. The Department
promotes student focused learning, affirms the African American legacy and
fosters a unique multicultural environment through its BSW and MSW curriculum
and advocacy roles in community change. The department graduates students who
are culturally competent to practice social work in rural, urban and global
settings.

TARGET PARTIALLY MET SACS assessment plans were completed for the 2015-2016 AY, but reports were not completed on time due to faculty not submitting information in a timely manner. Faculty pulled together various rubrics that might be helpful in designing rubric criteria and levels. Faculty have begun working on the rubrics but none have been completed. |
OVERALL: TARGET PARTIALLY MET Description of the expected use of results that will be addressed in the 2016-2017 academic year: Faculty will complete assessment plans and reports during the 2016-2017 AY by the institutional deadlines. Faculty will participate in workshops/trainings offered by SSU Academic Affairs office to ensure that plans and reports are submitted in the required format. Starting Spring 2017, MSW faculty will be required to collect and grade all benchmark assignments in Live Text (D2L can/will continue to be used as well). These changes are necessary to guide efficient future assessment planning and reporting. Faculty will continue to work on developing competency based rubrics during the 2016-2017 AY. Rubrics are expected to be completed and used to assess benchmark assignments starting Spring 2017. |

TARGET MET A total of 5 new agencies entered into MOUs with the Department this year. Drs. Samuel, Deloach, and Tuggle obtained a SAMHSA funded grant to increase knowledge of Substance Abuse, HIV/AIDS, and Hep. C on campus and in the community. This is a result of the existing BHSP grant and the new SA/HIV/AIDS, and Hep. C grant, the department has been able to offer two trainings and conferences to the community. Several additional trainings are planned for the 2016-2017 AY. In March 2016, 2 graduate students traveled abroad for an Alternative Spring Break in Trinidad and Tobago (10 undergraduate students also participated). In Summer 2016, 5 graduate students participated in the 5 week summer abroad program to Ghana and Liberia. This was the largest group of graduate students participating in the summer study abroad program. Students and faculty continued to participate in the annual VA Stand Down, World Food Day, and Make a Difference Day. Students also traveled to Atlanta to participate in Social Work Advocacy Day at the Capital were they had an opportunity to meet with elected officials and advocate for various health and human services policies. The planned signature event for students, faculty and alumni was a homecoming tailgate. However the tailgate did not occur to delays in getting all required materials and supplies in a timely manner. |
OVERALL: TARGET MET Description of the expected use of results that will be addressed in the 2016-2017 academic year: The Office of Field Education will continue to recruit additional field agency to affiliate with the Department to increase the number of diverse field placement offerings. Faculty will continue to seek out additional grant that will provide opportunities for students to gain professional experience, certifications, and credentials. Faculty and students will continue to participate in ongoing community service events. Faculty Advisers will encourage student organizations to also increase the number of service events. The 1st Annual SSU Social Work tailgate will take place during the Fall 2017 AY. Faculty will begin marketing the event in August 2017. |
